As the world population ages, health becomes an ever increasing concern. And rightly so. For without good health, what are we? Our physical body is all we have in this physical plane. Some people think that since they are eating a well-balanced diet, there is no need to consider taking dietary supplements at all. That may or may not be true and we will need to address and discuss this issue later. But for now, we must know what dietary supplements are in the first place.

But what are dietary supplements in the first place? Basically, dietary supplements can be divided into two categories:
i) nutritional supplements like vitamins and minerals and amino acids and
ii) botanical supplements, commonly known as herbal supplements

Do we really need dietary supplements in our daily diet? The answer is yes because of the following reasons.

Of course, if you are super health conscious, you can resort to buying only organic vegetables and fruits and watch your diet like a hawk, ensuring that you can all the minerals and vitamins your body need to be in optimal health. That will cost you a lot of time, not to mention money. But how many of us are like that? I bet you are one of those who don’t have the time or the inclination to do that.

Therefore for the rest of us, consuming dietary supplements is a must. The chances of us not getting our needed dosage of essential vitamins and minerals from our usual diets are very high. What happens if we don’t get the required nutrition? We fall ill. What happens when we fall ill? We seek medical care.

When you start to think about medical care, you will realize that you are going to burn a hole in your pocket and damage your bank account, given the ridiculously high cost of medical care these days. Do you want that option? I hope not.

Those of us that strive for optimal nutritional intake are aware of the benefits that we have seen over the short-term and hope to see additional benefits as we grow older. We have some advice for those of you that are just starting to think about supplementation. First of all, buy a good brand.

You don’t have to buy the most expensive supplements to get good ones. But, the quality of store brands and “dollar store” specials is questionable, at best. Unlike an over-the-counter generic drug, which must contain the exact formula found in a brand name brand, vitamins, herbs and nutritional supplements are not well regulated. Adhering to guidelines set down by trade organizations like the Council for Responsible Nutrition and the International Fish Oil Standards, is strictly voluntary.

The better manufacturers have high standards for purity, freshness and potency. Those three things are particularly important when manufacturing a fish oil dietary supplement, because the oils are prone to contain oxidation and contamination. In addition, the potency varies greatly.

Potency has to do with the amount and type of omega3 fatty acids that are in each capsule. This should be clearly listed on the label, along with the total amount of fat per dose. Typically, the total amount of fat per capsule is one gram or 1000mg. The total amount of omega3s is usually quite a bit less than the total.

A fish oil dietary supplement should provide a large amount of a specific fatty acid, generally referred to as DHA. The actual name is long and hard to remember how to spell, so we usually stick with the three letter abbreviation.

Low levels of DHA in the bloodstream have been associated with depression and bipolar disorder, as well as other psychiatric conditions. A recent article published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry suggests that supplementation is helpful, at least as a complement to standard care.

Some people that we know have seen improvement in their moods, just through supplementation, alone. But, doctors are wary of suggesting nutritional, rather than drug therapy, because of the serious nature of these psychiatric problems. They are also wary, because a fish oil dietary supplement might contain 280mg of DHA or it might contain only 100mg. It’s best to compare the DHA content before you buy, if you want to see the greatest results.

There are many other health benefits of supplementation, including those to the heart and circulatory system. So, even if you have never had a mood swing or trouble concentrating, supplementation is still worthwhile. People with arthritis, inflammatory bowel and other painful conditions have seen there symptoms diminish in a relatively short period of time.

If you buy a fish oil dietary supplement and don’t get the results that you expected, it is likely due to the quality of the brand. The better brands are always beneficial.
